March 4th for Literacy

Heidelberg Association's

Children's Book Drive

Saturday, May 30, 2015

As a part of the National UCC "Reading Changes Lives" literacy effort, our Heidelberg Association had a book drive for children's books this past spring, culminating in a picnic at Bern UCC's picnic grove on Saturday, May 30.

The following 14 UCC churches participated in the Heidelberg Association's "March 4th for Literacy Children's Book Drive."

          -- Bern Reformed, Bern Township
          -- Epler's, Bern Township
          -- First UCC, Hamburg
          -- North Heidelberg, North Heidelberg
          -- Salem (Belleman's), Centre Township
-- St. John's (Gernants), Ontelaunee Township
          -- St John's (Hain's), Lower Heidelberg Township
          -- St Luke's Union, Shoemakersville
          -- St Paul's, Robesonia
          -- Trinity, Lessport
          -- Trinity, Rehrersburg
          -- Zion, Womelsdorf
          -- Zion Blue Mountain, Strausstown
-- Bausman Memorial Chapel at Bethany's Children's Home, Womelsdorf

The association coverage area, representing some 2,500 to 3,000 church members, stretches from Hamburg in the north to Leesport in the east to Womelsdorf in the west and to Sinking Spring in the south.

The event included a free community-wide picnic, the distribution of thousands of books for children, with free hot dogs and ice cream, games, disc golf, and reading events.  It was held from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Bern United Church of Christ picnic grove, Route 183 at Plum Creek Road, Bern Township.

Most of the books are going to the Reading-Berks Literacy Council.  Some of the books will go to the Reading Police Department, where officers on the beat give books to city kids, which not only promotes reading but fosters a connection with police.

Thank you to all who helped with this event, participated, and/or donated books.
